Let Me Eat Cake

So, I know I said in an earlier post that I wasn’t sure I wanted to have a traditional cake at my wedding. Well, I went to Green Pastures today to pick up samples of their cakes and I am now SO OVER that sentiment. I want cake. The samples I received look so incredibly good it was really hard not to start gobbling on the way home.

I also managed to get more pictures of the house and grounds where we’ll be getting married. This is the main house:

Victorian mansion at Green Pastures

This is a view of the South Lawn. Most likely, we’ll set up a kind of ceremony-in-the-round back in the clearing between the trees.

South Lawn

Green Pastures also has several resident peacocks whose job it is to wander around the grounds and look awesome.

I was especially impressed with this guy:

All right, enough with the peacocks. Let’s get to the CAKE!!

We received 6 white cake samples and 6 chocolate cake samples.

White cake samples

1. White cake with fresh strawberries, key lime filling and American buttercream icing

Pretty standard, the fresh strawberries and lime filling were tasty, overall just okay.
2. Carrot cake with cream cheese icing
Oh. my. goodness. YUM! A favorite of mine and Ben’s. The cake was so moist and had great warm spicy notes! A little worried about guests with nut allergies though.
3. Italian cream cake with cream cheese icing
Tasty, but not as good as the carrot cake.
4. Lemon poppy seed cake with raspberry filling and creme fraiche
The cake was a little disappointing…dense and dry. Filling and icing, however, were delish.
5. Coconut cake with lemon curd and Italian buttercream
No. Just no. The coconut cake was waaay too chunky.
6. Orange citrus cake with creme fraiche and Grand Marnier buttercream
This was Ben’s favorite white cake option. The cake was a little on the dense side, but had a lovely and light citrus flavor.

Chocolate cake samples

1. Fat chocolate cake with German chocolate icing

A pretty standard German chocolate cake. They still went a little overboard with the coconut in the icing.
2. Chocolate almond cake with apricot filling and Amaretto icing
I actually loved this one! It was super intense, though. Very rich, almond-y and heavy on the Amaretto. I think Ben probably thought it was a little too much, but I would say it’s a contender.
3. Fat Chocolate cake with mocha filling and espresso buttercream
Again, very intense flavors here. You have to REALLY like coffee to enjoy this cake. Luckily, we do! Probably also a contender.
4. Red velvet cake with cream cheese icing
Meh. Standard red velvet. Just…aight.
5. Fat chocolate cake with vanilla cream and chocolate buttercream
The chocolate buttercream icing was probably my favorite icing…so light and yummy! However, Ben didn’t care for the vanilla cream so this one is probably out.
6. Fat chocolate cake with raspberry filling and fudge icing
Really, really good! The icing was fudgy and rich, but the tart and sweet filling helped cut through it. Ben’s favorite chocolate option.

By the time we had gotten through all the different samples, I was sweating profusely and Ben was about to pass out and go into a sugar coma.  And we still haven’t made up our mind so we’ll probably have to go back and re-taste a few.  Sigh…such a hard life we lead.
