NaBloPoMo Wrap Up

The last day of November is finally here!

Do I even need to tell you that I’ll be taking a blogging break during the first part of December?  Probably not.

I’m glad I took this challenge, though, because it did end up being really hard for me and yet I didn’t give up and made it all the way through the month.  I have a new appreciation for people who write for a living and it makes me feel good about myself that I stuck with something difficult and followed through.

Yay me!  I win at life.

But I think this challenge has also gotten me more excited about blogging.  Even though I’m planning a short break, I’m already thinking about some great posts for the holidays.  And excited about writing them!  So I guess that’s something.

So keep checking back!

Raiding the Family Recipes

One of the many things that my mom and I share is a love of cookbooks and collecting recipes.  Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I raided her recipe boxes and absconded with a few choice family recipes that I am going to try and replicate myself and maybe one day pass along to my children.

Among the ones I choose were:

Bibbie’s Tea Cakes

Great Aunt Mary’s Chocolate Cake

MawMee’s Heavenly Hash Cake (kind of like Great Aunt Mary’s chocolate cake but with marshmallows!)

Bibbie’s Divinity candy

I’ll definitely be documenting my efforts over the next few months.

Knowing my mom’s love of cookbooks, I got her a new one for her birthday this year that I also couldn’t help but copy a few recipes out of for myself.

Anyone who has spent any significant amount of time in Texas has probably been to Luby’s, home of the LuAnn Platter and the iced tea cart.  Memories of post-church Sunday lunches at Luby’s are permanently ingrained and as much a part of me as ShowBiz Pizza birthday parties and walking barefoot down red dirt roads in Lovelady, TX.  So, of course I jumped at the chance to be able to make Luby’s dinner rolls, macaroni and cheese and chocolate ice box pie without having to navigate crowds of octogenarians with trays full of Jell-O.  Sadly, the fried fish recipe was not included in the cookbook.  Lame.

How much time did you spend at Luby’s when you were growing up?  What was your Luby’s favorite dish?

The Hunger Games

I just finished reading this hugely popular young adult series over the Thanksgiving holiday.  I was hooked immediately!  The story is fast paced and really gives you heroes and heroines that you can really root for.

Hollywood wasted no time optioning the books and a Hunger Games movie is now in the works.  So far, only a screenwriter and producer have been nailed down and none of the characters have been cast.  However, there are already a number of fan made trailers out there on YouTube with each giving a different perspective of how they would want the film to look.

This one is my favorite:

I totally want to see this fake movie!

Six Word Saturday

High altitude makes me breathe harder.

Keeping kids from falling off mountains.

Windy mountain roads making me queasy.

My Christmas List

Well. That was fun. Now that Thanksgiving is over it’s time to move on to Christmas!

While you would have to hog tie me, throw me in the back of a pickup and threaten to punch a puppy to get me to a Black Friday sale, I’m definitely already thinking about Christmas presents and what will be on my Christmas Wish List.

And publishing it on my blog. Ahem.

Around My French Table: More Than 300 Recipes from My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan

Named one of the best cookbooks of 2010 by Amazon.com and Bon Appetit magazine.  This very personal collection of recipes and gorgeous photographs is the epitome of French home cooking.  I need!

New Metro Design Beater Blade

An upgrade for Big Red!  This KitchenAid mixer paddle attachment scrapes the sides of the bowl as it mixes so you don’t have to.  Whee!

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (Blu-Ray)

Only the best sci-fi series ever made.  In high def.  Nuff said.

Beauty in a Box: Eyes To Die For Kit with products by Peter Thomas Roth

A complete eye makeover in a box, this product promises to deliver astonishing anti-aging and brightening results as well as thicker and fuller lashes.  It may not seem like a really romantic gift, but it’s pricey enough that I would hesitate to buy it for myself and it would make me feel very luxurious.

Friday Night Lights: The Second Season

Man, I freaking love this show.  Growing up with high school football will definitely add an element of nostalgia when watching this show, but knowing about football, or even liking football, is not a requirement.  This is a character drama that also includes one of the most solid, affectionate and realistic portrayals of a marriage on TV.

GOgroove Speaker System for Apple iPhone

Cause sometimes I like to listen to music in my office.  And because my desk is pretty small, the fact that this docking system is wall mountable makes it really cool.

LEGO Make & Create Eiffel Tower

C’mon…it’s only $600.  Anyone wanna get this for me?  Anyone?
